Dental Hygiene at Park Royal Dental Clinic
Professional dental hygiene appointments at Park Royal Dental Clinic go significantly further than what brushing and flossing at home can achieve. No matter how diligently you clean your teeth, calculus (hardened tartar) builds up over time in areas that your toothbrush simply cannot reach — particularly below the gumline and between teeth. Once calculus has formed, it can only be removed by a trained dental professional.
Our hygienists are experienced in treating patients with a full spectrum of gum health — from those simply maintaining a healthy mouth to patients with established periodontal (gum) disease who need active treatment to stop further bone loss. We serve patients across Park Royal, Acton, Ealing, and the wider NW10 area from our clinic at Unit 5A, 9 Lakeside Drive.

Who is dental hygiene suitable for?
Dental hygiene appointments benefit everyone, but they are particularly important for patients who have been told they have gum disease (periodontitis), those who notice bleeding gums when brushing, people with fixed braces or dental implants (both of which require specific cleaning techniques), smokers (who are at significantly higher risk of gum disease), and anyone who wants to maintain the results of cosmetic treatment for longer.
Pregnant women should also prioritise hygiene visits, as hormonal changes during pregnancy can make gums more susceptible to inflammation and disease.
Park Royal Dental difference
Our hygiene team at Park Royal Dental Clinic includes therapists trained in the latest evidence-based periodontal techniques. We take the time to demonstrate personalised home care routines — because the most important cleaning happens at home between appointments, and we want to equip you to do it effectively.
We also offer EMS Airflow treatment (air tooth polishing), which is a significantly more comfortable and effective method of removing biofilm and staining compared to traditional scaling alone. Many of our patients who previously dreaded hygiene appointments find Airflow a much more pleasant experience.
Your treatment journey
How much does dental hygiene cost?
Hygiene appointments at Park Royal Dental Clinic are £80 for a routine 30-minute visit and £120 for a new patient 45-minute appointment. Children's hygiene visits (under 14, 30 minutes) are £65. Air polishing can be added to any hygiene visit for £20. A full periodontal assessment (60 minutes, including full gum charting and initial clean) is £160, and deep gum cleaning is £100 per 30 minutes. Maintenance appointments (45 minutes) are £120. We discuss costs with you before starting and will never carry out treatment without your prior agreement.

After your hygiene appointment your gums may feel slightly tender for 24–48 hours, and you may notice some sensitivity to cold. This is entirely normal and settles quickly. We recommend avoiding very hot or cold food and drink for the rest of the day. Your mouth should feel noticeably cleaner and fresher — most patients report this lasts for several weeks with good home care.
Dental Hygiene FAQs
My gums bleed when I brush — is this serious?
Bleeding gums are not normal and should not be ignored. They are usually a sign of gingivitis (early gum disease), which is caused by a build-up of plaque along the gumline. The good news is that gingivitis is entirely reversible with a professional clean and improved home care. If left untreated it can progress to periodontitis, which causes permanent bone loss.
How often should I see a hygienist?
This depends on your individual gum health. Most patients with healthy gums benefit from a visit every 6 months. Patients with gum disease or a history of it are typically seen every 3 months. Your hygienist will recommend the right interval for you after your initial assessment.
Can a hygienist whiten my teeth?
Hygiene treatment removes surface staining caused by tea, coffee, wine, and smoking — which often reveals a noticeably brighter smile. However, this is not the same as teeth whitening. For a change in the natural colour of your teeth, you would need professional whitening treatment, which we also offer.
Is gum disease linked to other health conditions?
Yes. Research has established strong links between untreated gum disease and systemic conditions including heart disease, diabetes, respiratory disease, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Treating gum disease is not just about your mouth — it is an investment in your overall health.
I have dental implants — do I still need hygiene appointments?
Yes — in fact, hygiene is even more critical with implants. Peri-implantitis (infection around an implant) is a serious condition that can lead to implant failure. Our hygienists are trained in implant maintenance and use specific instruments that are safe on implant surfaces.
