Retainers at Park Royal Dental Clinic

Retainers are the most important part of orthodontic treatment — and the most frequently neglected. All the time, money, and effort invested in straightening your teeth can be undone in months without proper retention. Teeth are living structures held in position by periodontal fibres, and those fibres have a memory that pulls teeth back towards their original position after they have been moved.

At Park Royal Dental Clinic we provide retainers at the end of all orthodontic treatments and take retention seriously. We also see patients who had orthodontic treatment elsewhere and have experienced relapse — and who need replacement retainers urgently to prevent further movement.

Who is retainers suitable for?

Everyone who has ever had orthodontic treatment needs a retainer — not for a set period, but indefinitely. Teeth never stop wanting to move. The most common reason for orthodontic relapse is patients stopping retainer wear after a year or two, believing their teeth are now stable. They are not. Retainer wear should be lifelong.

Why choose us

Park Royal Dental difference

We offer two primary types of retention. Fixed retainers are thin stainless steel wires bonded to the back surfaces of the front teeth — invisible from the front, permanent, and maintenance-free. Vivera retainers (Invisalign's proprietary removable retention system) are the thinnest, most accurate removable retainers available.

For patients who have experienced relapse, we assess how much movement has occurred and advise whether re-treatment is needed, or whether a retainer alone can hold the current position.

Aftercare advice

Fixed retainers: clean the wire and the teeth behind it carefully with an interdental brush or floss threader daily. Visit your hygienist regularly for professional cleaning of the retainer. If the wire comes loose, contact us promptly.

Removable retainers: wear as directed (typically nightly for life). Clean with a soft brush and cold water. Replace when they become distorted or no longer fit accurately.

Common Questions

Retainers FAQs

I stopped wearing my retainer years ago and my teeth have shifted — what can I do?

Contact us as soon as you notice movement. If the shift is minor, a new retainer may hold the current position. If significant relapse has occurred, a short course of clear aligner treatment followed by proper retention is usually recommended.

Can I see through a fixed retainer?

Fixed retainers are bonded to the inside (lingual) surfaces of the front teeth. They are completely invisible from the front and from the side.

Do fixed retainers cause any problems?

Fixed retainers require careful cleaning to prevent plaque building up on the wire. If not kept clean, there is a risk of gum inflammation. This is entirely preventable with good oral hygiene and regular hygiene appointments.
