Good oral health is about more than just brushing. Here are the evidence-based habits our team at Park Royal Dental Clinic recommends to every patient — simple changes that make a genuine, lasting difference.
1. Brush for two full minutes, twice a day
Most people brush for around 45 seconds. Two minutes is the minimum needed to clean all surfaces of your teeth effectively. Use a timer or an electric toothbrush with a built-in timer — it makes a bigger difference than you might expect.
2. Switch to an electric toothbrush
Electric toothbrushes — particularly oscillating-rotating models — remove significantly more plaque than manual brushing. They also make it harder to brush too hard, which protects your gums and enamel.
3. Interdental cleaning is non-negotiable
Brushing alone cleans only about 60% of your tooth surfaces. Interdental brushes (or floss) clean the spaces your toothbrush cannot reach — where the majority of gum disease and tooth decay begins. Once a day is sufficient for most people.
4. Wait 30 minutes after eating before brushing
After eating or drinking anything acidic, your enamel is temporarily softened. Brushing immediately can cause erosion. Rinse with water, wait 30 minutes, then brush.
5. Stay hydrated
Saliva is your mouth's natural defence against decay — it neutralises acids and washes away food particles. Staying well hydrated keeps saliva production healthy.
6. Cut down on frequency, not just amount
It is not just how much sugar you consume that causes decay — it is how often. Every time you eat or drink something sugary, your teeth are under acid attack for 20–40 minutes. Limiting sugary snacks to mealtimes dramatically reduces this risk.
7. Don't skip your hygiene appointments
No matter how well you brush and floss at home, some calculus build-up is inevitable. Professional hygiene appointments remove this before it damages your gums, and our hygienist can give you personalised advice for your specific needs.
