Many patients are unsure what actually happens at a hygiene appointment — or why it matters so much beyond the clean feeling afterwards. Here is a step-by-step guide to what you can expect at Park Royal Dental Clinic.
Why hygiene appointments matter
Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, and it is largely preventable. The early stage — gingivitis — is completely reversible with professional cleaning and good home care. Left untreated, it progresses to periodontitis, which causes irreversible damage to the bone and tissue supporting your teeth.
Regular hygiene appointments catch problems early and remove the build-up that home brushing simply cannot.
What happens during your appointment
1. Medical history review
At your first visit, Sara will review your medical history. Certain medications and conditions affect your gum health, so this is an important step.
2. Gum assessment
Sara will measure the depth of the pockets around each tooth using a small probe. Healthy pockets are 1–3mm. Deeper pockets indicate inflammation or gum disease.
3. Professional cleaning
Using ultrasonic and hand instruments (and Airflow technology where appropriate), Sara removes calculus, plaque, and staining from all tooth surfaces — including below the gumline where your toothbrush cannot reach.
4. Polishing
A gentle polish removes surface staining and leaves your teeth feeling smooth and clean.
5. Personalised advice
Sara tailors her home care advice to your specific situation — recommending the right toothbrush, interdental tools, and technique for your teeth and gums.
How often should I come?
For most patients, every six months is recommended. If you have a history of gum disease or are at higher risk, we may recommend every three to four months. Sara will advise on the right frequency for you.
