Children's Dental Check-Ups at Park Royal Dental Clinic

At Park Royal Dental Clinic, we genuinely love treating children. From a baby's very first tooth check to a teenager's orthodontic consultation, we approach every young patient with patience, warmth, and the understanding that the experiences children have in the dental chair shape their attitude to oral health for the rest of their lives.

Our child-friendly approach means we never rush, we always explain what we're going to do before we do it, we celebrate bravery, and we make visits something children look forward to — not something they dread. The goal is for every child to leave us with a positive experience they will talk about at home.

Is this right for me?

Who is children's dental check-ups suitable for?

We recommend all children attend their first dental check-up as soon as their first tooth appears, or by their first birthday — whichever comes first. This is not because anything is likely to be wrong, but because early familiarisation with the dental environment builds confidence and allows us to support parents with advice on diet, cleaning, and what to expect as the teeth develop.

From then, regular six-monthly check-ups allow us to monitor development, apply preventive treatments (fluoride varnish, fissure sealants), and catch any problems early — when they are simplest to treat.

Why choose us

Park Royal Dental difference

Our dentists have experience treating children from infancy through to young adulthood. We take extra time at children's appointments — never making them feel rushed or anxious. We use the 'tell-show-do' technique: explaining exactly what's going to happen, showing the instrument or tool, and then doing it — so there are no surprises.

For children who are particularly anxious or who have had previous difficult dental experiences, we offer longer appointments, pre-visit familiarisation visits, and if necessary, inhalation sedation (happy gas) to make the experience completely manageable.

Aftercare advice

At every children's check-up we provide parents with personalised, age-appropriate advice on brushing technique, diet, and the use of fluoride toothpaste. We will advise on the right toothbrush size and bristle type for your child's age, recommend an appropriate fluoride toothpaste concentration, and discuss any dietary habits that might be affecting their teeth.

Common Questions

Children's Dental Check-Ups FAQs

When should my child first visit the dentist?

As soon as the first tooth appears, or by their first birthday. Early visits are short and simple — we just want to say hello, have a look, and reassure parents. The most important thing is that children grow up seeing the dentist as a normal, positive part of life.

My child is scared of the dentist — what can you do?

This is very common and something we deal with every day. We have specific techniques for anxious young patients including tell-show-do, distraction, and gradual desensitisation. For very anxious children, inhalation sedation (nitrous oxide/happy gas) is available to make visits completely relaxed and positive.

Do baby teeth really matter? They'll fall out anyway.

Yes, absolutely. Baby teeth are essential for chewing, speech development, and most importantly, holding space for the permanent teeth. Losing baby teeth too early (through decay or extraction) causes the permanent teeth to drift, potentially requiring orthodontic treatment later. Looking after baby teeth is not optional.

When do fissure sealants become appropriate?

Fissure sealants are typically placed on the first permanent molars shortly after they erupt, usually around age 6–7, and again on the second molars at around age 12–13. They are a thin plastic coating applied to the deep grooves of molar teeth where most childhood decay occurs, providing significant protection.

How do I brush my toddler's teeth effectively?

Use a small-headed, soft-bristled toothbrush. For children under 3, use a smear of fluoride toothpaste (1000ppm fluoride). For children 3–6, use a pea-sized amount. Brush for two minutes, twice daily. Most importantly, brush the teeth yourself until your child has the dexterity to tie their own shoelaces — usually around age 7–8.
