Children's Tooth Extraction at Park Royal Dental Clinic

Extracting a tooth from a child requires particular skill, sensitivity, and patience. At Park Royal Dental Clinic, our team has extensive experience in paediatric extractions and understands that a child's first experience of having a tooth removed can shape their attitude to dental treatment for decades.

Our approach prioritises the child's emotional experience as much as the clinical procedure. We prepare every child carefully, explain what will happen in age-appropriate terms, use topical anaesthetic before the injection, and proceed at the child's pace — never rushing, never forcing.

For children who are particularly anxious, we offer inhalation sedation (nitrous oxide/happy gas), which creates a deeply relaxed, cooperative state without loss of consciousness.

Is this right for me?

Who is children's tooth extraction suitable for?

Extractions in children are most commonly needed for baby teeth that are severely decayed, retained baby teeth blocking the eruption of the adult tooth, abscessed baby teeth causing pain or infection, and as part of orthodontic treatment to create space.

In all cases we assess carefully whether extraction is truly necessary — we never extract a baby tooth lightly, as early loss can cause spacing problems requiring orthodontic treatment later.

Why choose us

Park Royal Dental difference

We use the highest quality local anaesthetic formulations and take the time to achieve profound anaesthesia before starting. A child who feels pain during a procedure will be a difficult and anxious patient for life. Getting the anaesthesia right is the single most important thing we do in paediatric extractions.

Parents are welcome — and encouraged — to stay with their child throughout the appointment.

Aftercare advice

After extraction: apply gentle pressure with the gauze provided for 20–30 minutes. Avoid hot food and drink for the rest of the day. Soft, cool foods are comfortable and well-tolerated. Avoid rinsing vigorously for 24 hours. Gentle salt water rinsing from day 2 helps keep the socket clean.

Common Questions

Children's Tooth Extraction FAQs

Will losing a baby tooth early cause problems?

It can. Baby teeth hold space for the adult teeth. When a baby tooth is lost early, adjacent teeth drift into the space, potentially blocking the adult tooth. For early extractions in strategic positions, we may recommend a space maintainer.

Can the extraction be done under general anaesthetic?

In the UK, dental treatment under general anaesthetic for children is reserved for cases where treatment cannot reasonably be completed under local anaesthetic. We always attempt treatment under local anaesthetic and sedation first.

How can I help my child before the appointment?

Be calm and matter-of-fact — children absorb parental anxiety very effectively. Use positive language. Bring a favourite toy or comfort object.
