Air Tooth Polishing (Airflow) at Park Royal Dental Clinic
EMS Airflow therapy is one of the most significant advances in dental hygiene of the past decade. At Park Royal Dental Clinic in NW10, we use the GBT (Guided Biofilm Therapy) protocol β a scientifically structured approach to professional tooth cleaning that uses Airflow as its centrepiece, delivering results that traditional scaling and polishing simply cannot match.
The Airflow device works by projecting a controlled, warm stream of water, compressed air, and fine erythritol powder at the tooth surface. This combination breaks up and removes the soft biofilm (the bacterial layer that causes gum disease and decay), surface staining from tea, coffee, and red wine, and deposits around orthodontic brackets, implants, and the gum margin β all without the scraping and discomfort that many patients associate with having their teeth cleaned.
Patients who have always dreaded the hygienist often find Airflow a completely different β and far more pleasant β experience.

Who is air tooth polishing (airflow) suitable for?
Airflow is suitable for virtually all patients and is particularly beneficial for those who have had unpleasant experiences with traditional scaling, patients with sensitive gums or teeth, anyone wearing fixed orthodontic braces (where biofilm builds up around brackets and wires), implant patients (the powder is safe on titanium and ceramic where metal scalers should not be used), and patients with heavy staining from tea, coffee, or tobacco.
It is also recommended for patients with active gum disease, as removing biofilm from below the gumline is a key step in halting periodontal breakdown.
Park Royal Dental difference
Park Royal Dental Clinic follows the GBT protocol β a structured, evidence-based approach to biofilm management developed by EMS, the Swiss company behind Airflow technology. This means we use a disclosing agent to reveal biofilm before treatment, systematically remove it using Airflow, and then use Piezon instruments for any remaining calculus β all in a logical sequence that maximises effectiveness and minimises patient discomfort.
Not all practices that offer Airflow use it to its full potential. We invested in the full EMS GBT setup because we believe our patients deserve the best available standard of preventive care.
Your treatment journey
How much does air tooth polishing (airflow) cost?
EMS Airflow therapy at Park Royal Dental Clinic is added to a hygiene appointment for an additional Β£20 on top of your hygiene fee. This modest uplift reflects the superior technology, clinical outcome, and significantly greater comfort compared to traditional polishing. Many patients find it a completely different β and far more pleasant β experience.

After Airflow treatment your teeth will feel exceptionally clean and your mouth noticeably fresh. Some mild sensitivity to cold is normal for 24β48 hours. Avoid very hot or cold food and drink for the rest of the day. The staining removal effect is best maintained by reducing tea and coffee consumption, or rinsing with water after consuming them. Most patients are recommended to return every 3β6 months.
Air Tooth Polishing (Airflow) FAQs
Is Airflow the same as a standard scale and polish?
No. A standard scale and polish uses metal instruments to scrape calculus and a rotary rubber cup with polishing paste. Airflow removes biofilm and staining with a pressurised powder-water stream, which is gentler, reaches more surfaces, and is significantly more comfortable.
Does Airflow whiten teeth?
Airflow removes surface staining, which often reveals a noticeably brighter natural tooth colour. This is not the same as professional whitening β Airflow cannot change the underlying shade of enamel. For a genuine colour change, professional whitening is needed.
How long does an Airflow appointment take?
A standalone Airflow appointment typically takes 45β60 minutes. Combined with a full hygiene assessment and scaling, allow 60β75 minutes.
Is it suitable for children?
Yes, with appropriate settings. We can use Airflow on children and teenagers, particularly those with fixed braces.
I have dental implants β is Airflow safe?
Yes β and it is the preferred cleaning method for implants. Metal instruments risk scratching the implant surface. Airflow uses erythritol powder which is effective and entirely safe on implant materials.
