Fluoride Treatment at Park Royal Dental Clinic
Fluoride is the most evidence-based substance in preventive dentistry. Decades of research have conclusively demonstrated that fluoride, applied at the right concentration, strengthens tooth enamel, remineralises early decay, and dramatically reduces cavity formation in both children and adults.
At Park Royal Dental Clinic we apply professional fluoride varnish (Duraphat 22,600ppm) at hygiene and check-up appointments for patients at elevated decay risk. This thick, sticky varnish adheres to the tooth surfaces for several hours, allowing prolonged fluoride release and uptake into the enamel — far exceeding what a fluoride toothpaste can achieve in the two minutes it is in contact with teeth.
Quick Facts
- ✓Strengthens enamel
- ✓Reduces decay risk
- ✓Suitable for all ages
- ✓Quick and painless
- ✓Particularly beneficial for children
Who is fluoride treatment suitable for?
Fluoride treatment is particularly beneficial for children (especially when permanent molars are erupting), patients with a high rate of new cavities, those with dry mouth, patients wearing orthodontic appliances, and adults with exposed root surfaces due to gum recession. Fluoride varnish is safe for all ages when applied by a dental professional.
Park Royal Dental difference
We apply fluoride varnish as a standard part of children's check-up appointments and recommend it at hygiene visits for higher-risk adult patients. We assess each patient's decay risk and apply it where the clinical evidence supports doing so — not indiscriminately.

How much does fluoride treatment cost?
Fluoride varnish application at Park Royal Dental Clinic is £20 when carried out as a standalone procedure. It is included in many of our hygiene and children's check-up appointments as standard.

After fluoride varnish application, avoid eating or drinking for 30 minutes. Avoid eating hard or sticky foods for the rest of the day. Do not brush your teeth until the following morning — the fluoride continues to work overnight. Some patients notice a slightly yellow film on their teeth after application; this is the varnish and washes off with the next brushing.
Fluoride Treatment FAQs
Is fluoride safe?
Yes. The safety of fluoride in dental products has been studied extensively for over 70 years. Professional fluoride varnish is applied in small, precise amounts. The dose is far below any level associated with side effects.
Is fluoride in toothpaste enough?
For many healthy adults with good oral hygiene, the fluoride in a 1450ppm toothpaste is sufficient. For higher-risk patients — children, those with dry mouth, active decay, or recession — professional varnish provides significantly higher concentration and longer contact time.
My child already uses fluoride toothpaste — do they need varnish too?
In many cases, yes. Fluoride toothpaste is only in contact with teeth for 2 minutes twice a day. Fluoride varnish, applied every 6 months, provides an additional concentrated dose that substantially reduces cavity risk in children.
