Inlays & Onlays at Park Royal Dental Clinic
Inlays and onlays occupy an important middle ground in restorative dentistry — more conservative than a crown but more durable and precise than a large filling. At Park Royal Dental Clinic, we use ceramic inlays and onlays fabricated by a specialist laboratory, providing a precision fit and a result that is essentially invisible in the mouth.
An inlay restores the area between the cusps of a back tooth. An onlay covers one or more of the cusp tips as well, providing greater protection when a significant portion of the tooth wall has been lost. Both are bonded permanently into the prepared tooth, creating a restoration that becomes part of the tooth structure itself.

Who is inlays & onlays suitable for?
Inlays and onlays are most appropriate for back teeth with moderate to large cavities that are too extensive to be reliably restored with a direct composite filling, but where sufficient healthy tooth structure remains that a full crown is not yet necessary.
They are also the preferred option for patients replacing large old amalgam fillings who want the most conservative, longest-lasting ceramic restoration available.
Park Royal Dental difference
The fit of an inlay or onlay must be perfect. We take impressions using addition-cured silicone materials that capture sub-micron detail, and work with a ceramic laboratory whose tolerances are exceptionally tight. We also take significant time at the fitting appointment to check every margin before final cementation.
Your treatment journey
How much does inlays & onlays cost?
Ceramic crowns, inlays, and onlays at Park Royal Dental Clinic start from £850. A well-made ceramic restoration routinely lasts 15–20 years, making the cost per year considerably lower than large fillings that need replacing more frequently.

After inlay or onlay placement avoid very hard foods for the first 24 hours while the bonding cement fully sets. Clean the margins carefully with dental floss. Report any sensitivity or changes to your bite promptly.
Inlays & Onlays FAQs
How is an inlay different from a filling?
A filling is placed directly into the cavity in a soft form and hardened in place. An inlay is made outside the mouth in a laboratory from a precise impression, then bonded in as a solid, pre-formed unit. Inlays have superior marginal fit, higher strength, and last significantly longer than large direct fillings.
Will I need a temporary between appointments?
Yes. After the tooth is prepared we place a temporary filling or temporary inlay to protect the tooth while your permanent inlay is being made.
Are inlays noticeable?
Not at all. Ceramic inlays are shaded to match the surrounding tooth and, once bonded, blend in completely.
Do inlays require special cleaning?
Clean around inlays exactly as you would natural teeth — brush twice daily and floss gently rather than snapping floss down forcefully.
