Mouthguards at Park Royal Dental Clinic

A custom-fitted mouthguard from Park Royal Dental Clinic is one of the most cost-effective protections you can invest in for your teeth — whether you play contact sport, grind your teeth at night, or clench during the day.

Unlike boil-and-bite guards available in sports shops, a custom mouthguard is made from a precise impression of your teeth. The result fits perfectly, stays securely in place during activity, distributes force evenly, and is thin enough to breathe and speak through comfortably.

Nightguards (occlusal splints) are custom-made and worn during sleep by patients with bruxism. They protect tooth surfaces from wear, reduce the load on jaw joints and muscles, and often eliminate the headaches and jaw pain that accompany grinding.

Who is mouthguards suitable for?

Sports mouthguards are recommended for anyone playing contact or collision sports — rugby, boxing, martial arts, hockey, basketball, and cycling among others.

Nightguards are recommended for patients who grind their teeth, which may be indicated by worn tooth surfaces, sensitivity, jaw aching in the morning, frequent headaches on waking, or a partner reporting grinding sounds during sleep.

Aftercare advice

Rinse your mouthguard with cold water immediately after use. Clean it with a toothbrush and mild soap or denture cleaner — never hot water, which distorts the acrylic. Store it in the ventilated case provided. Bring it to your check-up appointments so we can check for wear.

Common Questions

Mouthguards FAQs

Can I buy a cheaper mouthguard from a sports shop?

Boil-and-bite mouthguards are better than nothing, but they are bulkier, less retentive, and provide less even protection than a custom-made guard. A single dental injury can cost many times more to treat than a custom guard.

Will a nightguard stop me grinding?

A nightguard does not stop the grinding behaviour — it protects your teeth from the consequences of it. It is the most practical management tool for bruxism.

How do I know if I grind my teeth?

Common signs include worn or flattened tooth surfaces, sensitivity to cold, jaw aching or stiffness in the morning, frequent headaches on waking, and a partner reporting grinding sounds. We can identify signs of grinding at your check-up.

I have braces — can I still have a mouthguard?

Yes. We can make a mouthguard over orthodontic appliances. This is important for patients in fixed braces who play contact sports.
