What is a fissure sealant?
A fissure sealant is a thin plastic coating applied to the deep grooves on the biting surfaces of molar teeth. These grooves are too narrow for toothbrush bristles to clean, making them highly susceptible to decay. Sealants seal them off, providing significant protection. They are painless and quick to apply.
Does fluoride really help adults?
Yes. Fluoride strengthens enamel at any age by remineralising early decay and making teeth more resistant to acid. Professional fluoride varnish provides a much higher concentration than toothpaste and is particularly beneficial for adults with active decay, dry mouth, or recession exposing root surfaces.
How do I reduce my cavity risk?
The three most impactful changes are: reduce the frequency of sugar intake, clean between your teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes, and use a fluoride toothpaste of sufficient strength (1450ppm for adults). We discuss all of this at preventive appointments.
